The work world is changing rapidly. Some things are a given. As employees we want fair compensation. We want benefits that support our needs. Wait, that’s not the end of the story. We all want work that has meaning. We want an organizational vision that we can support. We want engaged co-workers. We want our leaders to inspire us and help us grow.
The combination of all these good things can be wrapped up into the concept of building a healthy organizational culture. One of the organizations I worked for was full of small “p” politics. Our employee recognition program should have given out Emmy Awards as there was more drama than a day-time soap opera. Looking back now, the headwaters of the drama came from a lack of trust, a lack of accountability, and self-preservation skills that had been learned over time.
They say you shouldn't meet your heroes, just in case actually getting to know them ruins the image you've conjured up — not so, in my case. In fact, my Dad was a hero to me and many others.
These women were so authentic and proud of what they had accomplished, but they were also reiterating the experience that I was wanting. Listening to them, it wasn’t just words about what it could be like. They were sharing a true experience.
