What a 9-Year-Old Taught Me About Leadership

What a 9-Year-Old Taught Me About Leadership

“Mom, what do you do again?”

It was one of those casual kid questions—asked while I was juggling half a dozen work tasks.
But before I could answer, she launched into her own work story.

Because my 9-year-old daughter had just been promoted.

In Roblox.

She recently started an entry-level job in a virtual world—checking passports.
She followed all the rules, did her job well, and got promoted.
She learned the next role, mastered that too, and earned another promotion.

Eventually, she was named Director of Safety, leading a team and managing all the roles she had once held.

And that’s when things got complicated.

One day, her boss told her she had to fire her entire team.

Caught off guard, she pushed back. But the directive held: everyone had to go.

Refusing to comply, my daughter stood her ground.

So her boss took it to a vote—asking the team if she should be fired as Director of Safety for insubordination (leaving out what the actual directive had been).

They all voted to keep her.

“You’re a good boss,” they said.
“You have our back.”

In the end, no one was fired. And my daughter was proud—not just of herself, but of her team.
They stood by her, just as she had stood by them.

It’s funny—a kid managing a fictional safety department in a pixelated workplace, navigating office politics like a tiny corporate ninja.
But there’s something very real in it too.

Leadership isn’t about titles.

It’s about trust.

Even in a made-up world, people respond to being seen, heard, and supported.
They want leaders who listen. Who advocate. Who take the hard road for the right reasons.

At BestDay, we build tools for those kinds of leaders—
The ones creating workplaces where:

  • People matter
  • Voices are heard
  • And long-term growth is possible

Sometimes that means helping a new employee feel welcome.
Sometimes it means helping HR avoid burnout.
Sometimes it means giving managers clearer insights into how to grow and retain their teams.

From applicant tracking to retirement,
We help leaders show up better—for their people, and for themselves.

Because the best day at work is the one where your team knows you’ve got their back.

Even when the boss says otherwise.
